but federal law requires all federally licensed firearm dealers to perform a background check before any sale of a firearm.

Does Montana have a Gun Free Zone law?
Yes, Montana has a defined list of gun free zones:
Portions of a government owned buildings such as offices and any related part of that office such as a park/open ground
A room where alcohol is being sold, dispersed, and consumed under licenced for the sale of alcohol to be consumed on premises
A treatment facility operated by the Department of Public Health and Human Services
A correctional/detention facility operated by the Department of Corrections or a treatment facility that is being operated by the Department of Health and Human Services
In a detention facility
A secured law enforcement building/facility owned and/or operated by the city or county (i.e police station)
A public security screening checkpoint regulated by the transportation security administration in a publicly owned commercial airport
In a building owned and operated by the United States
On a military reservation owned and/or operated/managed by the United States
A private property where the owner or someone with authority (including the tenant or the lessee has expressly prohibited the use and possession of firearms
A courtroom or an area of the courthouse in use by the court personnel
In a school building as determined by the school board
Does Montana Require a Safety Course to own a Firearm?
You are not required to take a safety course in order to own a firearm in Montana.
